Pathways to employment

Tailoring Project

Location: Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Northern Uganda

Project details

At RRYM we are very proud to support the Tailoring Project at Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Northern Uganda, where initial contributions included the construction of the semi-permanent structure housing the project, and purchase of sewing machines, furniture, and essential equipment needed to establish the programme.

More recently, this project has been scaled to support a  3–4 month tailoring programme, which provides practical vocational training for young women living in Kyangwali Refugee Camp, Uganda, who face limited employment and income-generating opportunities. The programme equips participants with marketable tailoring and garment-making skills, helping them build self-reliance, improve their livelihoods, and increase their prospects for sustainable employment or small business creation.

The course serves approximately 30–40 women each year at a cost of just £15–£20 per student. Training is delivered by a dedicated instructor, with salary costs ranging from £40–£62 per month depending on whether tuition is provided on a part-time or full-time basis. By investing in practical skills development, the programme empowers refugee women to support themselves and their families while contributing to their local community.
