The Awakening Initiative for Refugees (AIR) is a fully registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) located in Block 75, Kyebitaka Village, within Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Kikuube District, Uganda. AIR was established with a vision of empowering refugees and host community members through education, skills development, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. Operating legally within the settlement, the organization serves as a platform for initiatives that foster self-reliance, community engagement, and long-term social and economic development.

Under AIR’s management are two transformative projects—the Community Library and the Tailoring Project—which have become invaluable resources for both refugee and host communities. While these projects were originally conceived by Gideon, their successful launch, growth, and continued operation have been made possible through the exceptional generosity and unwavering support of Heulwen, her family, friends, and RRYM as an organisation. 

The partnership between AIR and RRYM reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunities for vulnerable communities through education and practical skills training. Since the projects were established, the charity has worked closely with local partners to provide funding, resources, and ongoing operational support. Despite relying on modest resources, RRYM has remained dedicated to ensuring that both projects not only began successfully but continue to make a lasting impact within Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. Through this collaboration, AIR has been able to expand access to learning, vocational training, and community development opportunities, helping individuals and families build brighter and more sustainable futures

One of the most inspiring components of the initiative is the Community Library. We were delighted to help establish this important educational resource by raising funds for the local purchase of books, as well as collection of additional donated resources from around the UK.

Alongside the library, we were equally excited to support the Tailoring Project, which provides practical skills training and opportunities for self-reliance.
